Magnifying your collection

Magnifiers are an essential accessory for the stamp collector. You’ll need at least one whether it be a loupe, folding magnifier or a reader. Magnifiers help you correctly identify stamps, see detail, spot any flaws, varieties or even forgeries.

 

Loupes

Loupes are small magnification devices used to see small details more closely. Some loupes have focusing lenses.

PROS: Small and can be held in the eye for stamp detail viewing.

CONS: Not so good for the overall stamp view.

Folding loupe

Folding loupes fold back in to a protective housing so good for pocket use.

PROS: As above and portability.

CONS: As above.

 

Round readers

Round readers are the traditional choice. Usually large a bulky so not particularly portable.

PROS: Good for overall view.

CONS: Not so good for the small detail and not very portable.

 

Rectangular readers

Rectangular reader are an alternative to the round variety.

PROS: Good for overall view.

CONS: Not so good for the small detail and not very portable.

 

Magnifying headsets

Headsets with magnifiers enable you to keeps your hands free. Some are illuminated by LEDs for a better view.

PROS: Hands free and nice and light with LEDs..

CONS: Slightly odd looking – best used behind closed doors!
